TOKYO, Aug 31 (Reuters) – Japan’s health minister stated on Tuesday it was extremely likely that international matter present in Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) COVID-19 vaccines within the southern prefecture of Okinawa have been prompted when needles have been caught into the vials.
Some Moderna pictures have been quickly halted in Okinawa on Sunday after international supplies have been found in vials and syringes. The health ministry stated later needles could have been incorrectly inserted into vials, breaking off bits of the rubber stopper.
“Whatever the reason (for the foreign matter) we have heard that there is no safety or other issues,” health minister Norihisa Tamura advised reporters, including that it was not unusual for international materials to enter a vial with different vaccines.
“We will continue to gather information and report back,” he added.
Japan is going through its largest wave of COVID-19 infections to this point through the pandemic, pushed by the extremely transmissable Delta variant.
A race to spice up inoculations has been hampered by delays in imported vaccines and the discovery of the contaminants in some Moderna doses that prompted the suspension of three batches final week.
Taro Kono, the minister in command of the inoculation marketing campaign, stated on Tuesday he needed to hurry up shipments of vaccines to municipalities that had been pressured to place a halt reservations as a consequence of shortages.
